Cllr Mrs Lorna Spencer Hughes 1924-2004

Parish and Town Council
The late Lorna Hughes first joined the Llantwit Major Parish Council in 1955, aged just 31 years; She was Chairman for the Parish Council for the years 1961/62 and again 1969/70. Lorna remained on the Parish Council right up until 1974 when it was taken over by the Town Council. Lorna became one of the first members of the New Town Council. Becoming Mayor of this Council in the years 1976/77 and again in 1996/97. Lorna remained on the Town Council until her passing in April 2004, being the only Councillor to have been Chairman/Mayor Four times and having completed 49 years continuous service.

South Glamorgan County Council
Lorna Hughes was first elected to South Glamorgan County Council on 2nd May 1985, and represented the Electoral Division of Vale of Glamorgan; South West Lorna was Chairman of the Council in 1989/90. Her photograph is indeed in the Gallery on level one at County Hall Cardiff, Lorna’s service with South Glamorgan County Council ended at Reorganisation in 1995/ 1996.

Vale of Glamorgan Council
Lorna was first elected to the former Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council on its inception in 1973 and served on that authority and its successor, the current Vale of Glamorgan Council, continuously until her retirement at the 1999 elections. She was Mayor of the Vale in 1993/94 having served as Deputy Mayor in 1991/92.

Lorna was a life-long Labour supporter, Headmistress of three local schools and well loved amongst the people of Llantwit Major, The Park on the High Street was renamed in her Honour As Lorna Hughes Park and the Official took place on Saturday 26th September 1998. Between all the Councils Lorna served she became Chairman/Mayor Six Times.

Lorna Hughes was very much a pillar of the Community, and will always be fondly remembered by the citizens of Llantwit Major.
