Designation - Town Council Town
Mayor Cllr Davies thanked the members for electing him the Town Mayor on this very historic occasion. He agreed with the need for Llantwit Major to become a Town Council thus raising it to its correct status. He quoted a passage froma manuscript written by a lady many years ago who even then referred to Llantwit Major as an 'ancient and historic town'. Cllr Davies felt that this period would go into history as an important era in Local Goverment and stressed the great need for co-operation of all the Local Authorities. Town Mayor The Mayor asked for nominations for Deputy Mayor. It was proposed by Councillor O J Rees, seconded by Cllr M Pearce and Resolved: That Councillor J D Evans be elected Deputy Mayor for the said year. Cllr Evans thanked the members most sincerely for the appointment. During the meeting Appointments of Committes were appointed, Banking Facilites were set up and The managing Commitee for the King George V Playing Fields was put into place. Cllr Pearce also proposed that the former Parish Council Chairmans Chain of Office be allocated a place of honour in the Council Chamber, where it can be seen today. The Clerk was requested to obtain information of new insignia, suitable for the new authority, and that he also write to the South glamorgan County Council and the Welsh office informing them that as the 1st April 1974, llantwit Major Town Council was duly constituted and that Cllr A C W Davies had been elected Town Mayor and Cllr J D Evans had been elected Deputy Town Mayor, the next meeting was set for 9th April 1974.
